When the new Nissan Rogue coincided with the new Star Wars Rogue One movie, why not make an interactive 360º Star Wars battle scene? Partnered with Industrial Light & Magic, Disney, Nissan, and Critical Mass, we set out to create an immersive 360º experience that would simultaneously show off the safety features of the new Nissan mid-size SUV, while also promote and allow users to enter the new Star Wars Rogue One universe.
Presented with the technical challenge of combining live action 360º with the heavy VFX of Star Wars all with a moving camera we were on the bleeding edge of what spherical camera systems could do. We needed high quality footage with the agile nature of a steady cam on a moving vehicle. Designing two different camera rigs, one moving and one stationary, we set out to shoot in a California desert. Incorporating real Storm Troopers and pyrotechnics to achieve the most real effect in a VR headset, we aimed for full immersion.
Once the shoot was complete, we designed and developed an interactive app for Oculus, Vive, and Steam VR. The app outlined the safety features of the car and included multiple hotspots for users to engage with our content. We also released a passive 360 version for all VR streaming platforms.
Overall it was a successful media integration to promote both the New Nissan Rogue as well as Star Wars Rogue One.
