Like every great collaboration, we started with a jam session… a mind meld… a mental map.

Kendrick and Shantell both have bold styles. Using musical inspiration from Kendrick’s latest album, Shantell Martin illustrated scenes that would become a backdrop throughout Kendrick’s beach performance at Art Basel Miami. 

Giving dimensionality to Shantell’s black and white line drawing style, we gave her a three dimensional paint brush in virtual reality and let her work. Extracting each linear stroke’s XYZ position in space, we crafted live show visuals for the Miami crowd watching from the beach. We used live show audio as an animating backbeat to make Shantell’s work come alive. Driven by MIDI controllers, we live animated camera paths during the show.

It was a true collaboration, one that resulted in a creatively unique mashup of music and illustration at Kendrick’s beach performance at Art Basel Miami.
